One of the first questions every patient asks before surgery and it’s one of the most important. Here’s what the latest evidence actually says.
If you’ve been advised a knee or hip replacement, the first thing on your mind is probably: “Will this last the rest of my life?” It’s a fair question and one our patients ask us every single day at our clinic.

Modern implants have advanced significantly. Most patients can expect a knee replacement to function well for 15 to 20 years, and in many cases even longer especially with proper rehabilitation and a healthy weight. Hip replacements show similar or even better longevity, with studies reporting over 80% of implants surviving past the 20-year mark.
What affects how long your implant lasts?
Your age and activity level at the time of surgery, your body weight, implant material and design, the surgeon’s technique, and how well you follow post-operative care all play a role.
Younger, more active patients tend to put greater stress on the implant, which can reduce its lifespan. This is why timing the surgery thoughtfully, not too early, not too late, matters. As the leading knee specialist in Kanpur, we work closely with each patient to determine the ideal window for surgery.
When does a replacement need revision? Over time, the bond between the implant and bone can loosen, or the plastic spacer between components can wear down. This is called implant wear or aseptic loosening and it’s the most common reason for revision surgery. Signs include returning joint pain, swelling, or reduced mobility years after the initial procedure.
The good news: revision surgery has also improved dramatically. With the right care and timely follow-ups, most patients live comfortably for decades after their replacement.
If you’re in Kanpur and considering a knee or hip replacement, or simply want a second opinion, our team is here to help you make an informed, confident decision.
